Known limitations of Export, alpha release
Export is currently available as an Alpha release.
Formats
There are currently two file formats you can select from when exporting.
JSON exports
Provide you a single JSON file that preserves the full data structure and relationships. JSON is ideal for Notebook integration.
CSV exports
Are delivered as a single ZIP file of multiple CSV tables that have been organized to prioritize readability, and grouped by related data. You may notice the following:
Multiple CSV Files: A CSV file will be created for each of the relationships represented in the table you exported. For example, a protein table that includes related drugs data will export two files, a protein table and a related drugs table.
Large cells of data: CSV exports are not flattened, meaning you will see multiple values in a single cell that are delimited by commas. This has been done to create an export that reflects the experience of the Table Builder interface.
Separate CSV files for Eligibility Criteria: Clinical Trial tables including Eligibility Criteria and Outcome Measures exports may be delivering more CSV files than you might expect.
Because Outcome Measures and Eligibility Criteria are organized as groups (with parent and sub-headings), the export process treats these as distinct relationships, even though they all ultimately relate back to the individual clinical trials in your table.
As a result, when exporting a Clinical Trial table that includes Outcome Measures and Eligibility Criteria, you will receive a minimum of three CSV files, and potentially more depending on the additional data selected. These typically include:
Clinical Trials
Clinical Trials <> Outcome Measures
Clinical Trials <> Eligibility Criteria
We are currently exploring ways to consolidate these into a single CSV file to simplify the exported files.
Row restrictions
By default, export currently supports up to 100 rows per file, with expanded row limits available depending on your organization’s data agreement.
Large data cells limitations
Some data cells in Table Builder are quite large. In order to ensure timely downloads, data cells will export a maximum of 5,000 values per cell. If a data cell exceeds this, only the first 5,000 values will be included in your download. The Pathways data is an example where cells are known to exceed 5,000 values.
Third-party spreadsheet limitations
Some spreadsheet tools (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets) have character limits on their data cells. If an exported Table Builder cell exceeds these limits, the cell may appear blank or fail to import correctly when added to a third-party sheet. These constraints are set by the spreadsheet software and are outside the control of the export feature.
Scheduled Improvements
As part of an Alpha release we are actively seeking feedback and continuing to iterate on the export experience. Your feedback is vital at this time.
